Gem Horn Dragons
Gemhorn Dragons are named by their obvious trademark translucent,gem-like horn in the middle of their heads. The horns come in a varietyof colors, where as well as the dragons themselves.
There are tworegions of Gemhorns, though there isn't cosmetic differences betweenthe two, there are some cultural differences. On larger content of theplanet, is where the main group of Gemhorns reside, (sometimesclassified as the nata Gemhorns) and to the northeast on a largeisland, is where the secondary group of Gemhorn reside (sometimesclassified as mera Gemhorn)
Nata Gemhorn all live in smallgroups. Though they migrate to warmer climates in the winter, they arevery territorial towards other Gemhorns of their 'nests', both wherethey reside in the summer and in the winter.
The mera Gemhorn, aren't territorial like that nata Gemhorn, this is mostly due to thefact that their home has less landspace than the nata Gemhorn's home. They live in large groups, though, they are very arrogant and onlyaccept other gemhorns of their own genetic line. Of course, this alsoleads to much more frequent, yet mild, defects in their families, unless they 'mix' with other groups of the same genetic line.
Males, have dual colors and markings, which can include a variety of patterns.Females are only solid colors, though there is a slight differencebetween the mera and nata females. Mera gemhorn females have slightmetallic sheens to their scales, and nata Gemhorn females have aslightly darker tone of their main color on their mozzles, tail tips, and hands/feet, which fade to their main color. Other featuredifferences associated with gender, females have a thick sort of skinridge, that starts at the base of the skull and ends at the tail spade, and the male have spines that follow in a similar fashion.
Every Gemhorn has a sort of headfin, with head horns that have membrane thatconnect them together. They can have as many as 3 horns on each side,in a variety of shapes (except for spiraled) The horns can all movetogether, up and down only. This is used to portray mood or 'body talk'
Although, there are rarer headfin formations. There have been cases whereGemhorns lack their headfins altogether, and even some where theheadfin is extended down the shoulders. (these shoulder horns have thesame mobility as the head horns) Also, abnormalities such as ridges, bumps, or extra 'growth' on horns, is a sign of genetic defect, pertaining to a calcium deficiency.
The tail spade also can be usedto determine a gemhorn's genetic line. As far as once can tell, thereare 4 main genetic strains of gemhorns, of both regions. This is howmera gemhorn determine which genetic like another gemhorn is from.
Gemhornsare all around the same general size, from 10-12 feet in height, and28-34 feet in length, where as the mera Gemhorns are shorter, at 8-10feet in height and 20-27 feet in length.
Gemhorns are also verypowerful creatures, their main weapon is their powerful jaws. The maleshave slightly more pronounced jaws, as well as small, tusk-like molarsin the back of their mouth. This is not noticeable when their mouthsare closed. Female jaws aren't as pronounced, and they have smaller, single set of molar tusks.
Females also have a defensive featurethat males do not. Poisonous glands are located near the end of theirtailspades, which they can secrete poison at will. The poison itselfisn't exactly life threatening, but rather, more irritating, as itcauses a burning sensation when it touches unbroken flesh, even tothick hides. This is their primary defensive weapon they use when theyare nesting, in order to ward off attacker from their young withoutactually engaging them, which could leave their young open for attackfrom other members of an attacking pack. They can also secrete poisononto their tailspades and flick it at the predator, if they are notwithin a range in which their tail can reach them.
Gemhorns lay 3 eggs at a time. When about to give birth, females will cutthemselves off from the rest of the group, and find their own place, until the eggs are layed and hatched, and will return to their young assoon as they are able to walk. Gemhorn pairs mate for life.
Communicationfor Gemhorns is a sort of empathy, where they are able to senseanother's feelings and thoughts. One could say they are communicatingtelepathically but it's more complicated than that, and not as easy tomisinterpret. They also use song-like cries to communicate amongst eachother.
